As a young child I never was much into fairy tales or princesses, I was the little girl you’d find in the backyard making forts, mud pies and climbing and swinging from our vine tree like Tarzan. When the fairy garden fad hit I wasn’t interested in jumping on board, however there really is something magical in the thought of a tiny world in the forest, even dreaming of living among it. I created a “fairy garden” on the lower shelves of our fish tank stand last spring , and later on in the year I created miniature Halloween and Christmas villages and planned this year to do a miniature fairy garden.
I hadn’t been able to find a wooden case or even small suitcase when I decided to hit the thrift stores and see what creative alternative I could come up with. The first thing that caught my eye was a little metal birdcage/house and I immediately thought I’ll line it with moss and some foam and add miniatures to it. Then a bag with 3 frames for $3 was next to find a home with me, on my way out of the last thrift store a wooden tray that looked very vintage jumped out at me and with the price tag of $1 I was screaming “start the car” ( an IKEA commercial quote for anyone that doesn’t know, and one of my favorites to say when I find a deal)
The rest came together over the next few days of brainstorming and visits to a few dollar stores and Michaels (during their BOGO sale on miniatures)
I hope you enjoy the pictures and are inspired to create your own fairy garden inspired décor this summer. At the bottom of the page I have included free prints of the ones in my frames, they will fit in a 5×7 frame.
I HAD PLANNED ON PAINTING THE TRAY AND THE WOODEN FRAME BUT CHANGED MY MIND AS I LIKE HOW IT LOOKS BLENDED WITH THE METAL HOUSE,METAL FRAME, AND SPLASHES OF COLOURS ON OTHER THINGS.
MINIATURE TREE TRUNK FROM MICHEALS FAIRY GARDEN MINIATURES
MINIATURE SNAIL PIGGY BACKING ON A TURTLE FROM MICHEALS FAIRY GARDEN MINIATURES
HARD TO SEE BUT I MADE A HILL WITH FLORAL FOAM AND MOSS AND PUT SOME MINIATURE TREES FROM MICHAELS ON IT AS WELL.
THIS CAME FROM A DOLLARAMA, THE CLAY POT WAS GREY SO I PAINTED IT TO MATCH MY LIVING ROOM COLOUR SCHEME. I USED AN ELASTIC TO HOLD THE PLANT OUT OF THE WAY SO I COULD PAINT THE TOP EDGES.
THIS MUG CAME FROM DOLLAR TREE, IT WAS MORE THEN I HAD HOPED TO FIND , BLUE GREEN AND BROWNS ALL IN ONE, A PERFECT SPLASH OF COLOUR IN MY COLOURSSCHEME, AND ITS A SQUARE SHAPED MUG.
I ADDED FLORAL FOAM DOWN IN IT THEN HOT GLUED THE MOSS ON AND PUSHED IN THE CERAMIC MUSHROOMS I FOUND AT DOLLARAMA
AN IDEA FOR A CHILDS CRAFT WOULD BE TO PRINT OFF A FAIRY DOOR COLORING PAGE OR MAKE YOUR OWN WITH CONSTRUCTION PAPER AND FRAME IT. THEN ADD INEXPENSIVE FAIRIES/GNOMES AND ACCESSORIES IN FRONT OF IT.
