WHAT WAS IT WEDNESDAY-CASSETTE TAPE ORNAMENTS

wednesday copy

As July has come to an end and summer vacation with the kids is officially half over, the Christmas crafts still continue here.
Every year I promise myself I will get a jump on Halloween and Christmas crafts, then I think no, I want to feel festive during the season instead.

The struggle is real, the choice hard, even though I should remember the years past, finding myself juggling my time to get “my to do” lists accomplished, I somehow convince myself starting too early will ruin the fun.

This year having a blog to share it all has me jumping in and juggling Halloween and Christmas crafts through the summer.

So far my nieces and I have coloured print outs that will be turned into gift tags, I made a few crochet stockings that I shared here, and todays share has been a work in progress.

We always have multiple trees for the holidays in our home, however we’ve seen some come and go and have downsized substantially the last few years.
Last year we re-added one for hubz Simpson’s ornaments, it sits in our games room and last year all I had time to make was some crochet stockings in his Philly Flyers colours to go with the Simpsons ornaments.

We did find a retro looking star tree topper as well, but I knew this year I needed more for it.

The theme is childhood faves/retro/sports, and so my plan was to make ornaments within those themes.

Today I am sharing my idea for a retro ornament, when I seen cassette tapes at a local thrift store for 10 cents each I had the idea to spray paint them and make them into ornaments! I am hoping to use the cases for gift card holders and maybe other things as well.

Hubz helped me dig through the piles looking for the clear style cassettes, I figured these would cover the best.
No worries no collectable tapes were hurt in the making of this craft, I am almost positive these titles if not upcycled would have ended up in the landfill.

As for the paint, I am normally a dedicated fan of Krylon Fushion spray paint for anything plastic but I did have some cheaper paint I picked up to spray paint the inside of a shelf I am turning into a minatures display for halloween- still leaving tons in the can.

It is a silver hammered type colour, I went back and forth with what colours to do, but in the end having this paint already and deciding the silvery tone of it looked great on a test cassette I continued on.
So far 10  are done, the plan is to finish 20 total.

To make your own here is a quick tutorial:

YOU WILL NEED

Clear cassette tapes

Silver or hammered spray paint (or your choice of colours, I debated on all black on a black cassette or neon colours on the clear)

Ribbon or String for hanging

Pull the tape (ribbon) out of the cassettes, be careful as it breaks easy and it goes up and in and you cant get at it again. I had some do that but once painted you can’t see it, I prefer to know it’s removed, I’m picky lol.
Make sure you DO snip away all the ribbon from the front of the cassette before painting-see picture below of the front painted and no ribbon visable.
Hubz pointed out how the ribbon would make cool tinsel for the tree, very retro, but we have 3 cats and so the “tinsel” was tossed out.

Simply spray paint the tapes and thread some ribbon or string through the holes on it for hanging.

Some at the right angle show the lettering ever so slightly, it may be the cheap paint or just because, you have to really look to see it, as hubz says, no one is going to get up that close to see it.

So far this cheap spray paint is holding up, no chippng, hubz looked in horror as I tried to chip it with my nails and immediately asked me WHY ARE YOU DOING THAT? Silly hubz, one must always test durability of paint jobs.

If I needed to buy paint and if have to recommend one, it would be Krylon Fushion, but hey these are just ornaments and a cheap paint will probably do.
Merry Christmas in July one last time

Stay tuned for summerween (no promises Ill have anything fully done before September though)
