WHAT WAS IT WEDNESDAY-FALL DECOR

wednesday copy

Most times when I’m thriftng I see an item and I know exactly what I will do with it, with the exception of odds and ends I pick up and add to my stashes.

This summer I seen this wooden cabinet, I imagine it was made to hang on a wall to store things away, perhaps even a small medicine cabinet. I didn’t have a clue what I would use this for, it would look great stained as it was build but never stained or painted, but I didn’t need a wall cabinet anywhere, but for $5 it came home with me.

My hubz often will be heard asking me, whatcha doing? as I stare blankly at my projects envisioning where I am going with them. This one didn’t take long to decide what I would do with the inside shelf part but this door stumped me for a few weeks.

As September was nearing, the more I glanced over at this little cabinet’s door for some reason the inside of it looked like it would make a uniquely shaped jack-o-lantern. I got to painting it to see if I could paint the outside grey and the inside orange without making a mess as taping it off really wasn’t an option, a little brush helped me accomplish it with ease. For the face I printed it off, used carbon paper to transfer it on and used a Sharpie Paint Pen to “paint” it on, I distressed it all a little bit too.pumpkin sign.png

I am not one for doing reversible décor, as in a pumpkin on one side something Christmassy on the other, I know I would store it at the end of Christmas in the Christmas bin and next fall this guy would be nowhere to be found. However with this door the reverse side screamed chalkboard to me, originally as I stared at it it’s all I could see, but I really wanted to use the front side with the wooden corner pieces. I decided to go ahead and do the chalkboard on the other side.

I went with more of a thanksgiving idea, here in Canada our thanksgiving is at the beginning of October, I planned to show the chalkboard side up until it was over then my jack-o-lantern would be flipped over.

I have done these faux chalk boards in the past, just regular flat black paint and a white pencil crayon, tried it one time for a Christmas sign and loved how it turned out.

Simply paint your wood with flat black craft paint (acrylic type) distress it a bit with some sand paper.

Next print your design on a piece of paper ( or hand do it), use carbon paper to transfer it onto your wood surface, it will be very light and hard to see but its there, I use a lamp to work under to see the lines best. Keep your pencil crayon sharp and apply it to the outlines, then spray it with a clear coat spray paint in matte.

The cabinet door reversable sign now sits as part of fall décor in our hallway, under a table that my dad made for me over 20 years ago, the stain colour is not one I’d choose but I don’t have the heart to paint this set or redo it ( it has a matching window pane mirror that hangs above it)

In amoung the décor is a white ceramic pumpkin that was an oil diffuser top that no longer works, a thrift find pumpkin jar, two foam pumpkin floral arrangements made at Michael’s make it events, a crate I made with scrap already stained plywood a friend gave us, I purchased 1×3 pine for the sides and colour matched the stain( its not a perfect match but I love the old look it gives), a scrap piece 2×4 pumpkin I made in 5 minutes, a tall wooden vase my neighbor gave me a few years back which I belive she said was used to hold toilet paper, and the faux scrap wood printout I made and you can find it at the end of this page free to print and put in a 8×10 frame.

I plan to make something for the top of the crate and the table needs something to occupy the front corner, my plans may carry over to next year and that’s ok I’m sure in a pinch I can find something to fill these spaces for this year.FLOWER PUMPKIN 2018.pngFALL TABLE TOP DECOR.png

This tall wooden “vase” that use to hold toilet paper is too deep for most floral, I found a few small cardboard boxes that fit and filled the bottom to create a false bottom up higher inside, I used two boxes and you can not see them once the floral is in.wooden vase.png

This is a pumpkin I made at Micheals 2 years ago, the events are great, you buy the foam pumpkin (which are on sale often well before and during the event) and they supply the floral and guidance on how to do a fall floral arrangement. Last week I did the wreath and will be doing the Christmas one again this year.

As I left this year’s class, which is more like drop in from 2-4, a lady saw me carrying mine and said how she really liked it, I told her about the event and as I was cashing out a bit later she was purchasing 2 foam pumpkins and heading to the class, YAY! hope she enjoyed it.

  1. Okay…WOW, love all of these. I would have a ton of fun with you out looking for junk to recreate, isn’t that fun? I liked how you came up with the idea to turn that cabinet into a Jack’O’Lantern. Then you got even more creative and turned the other side into a Thanksgiving sign…super talented. I love that about blogging, there are a ton of very talented people out there. Can’t wait to see what you come up with for Christmas too.
